What is the Bookend Model?
Effective communication is the cornerstone of every relationship, and crafting your message is critical to effective communication.
Many public speakers use a simple construct when designing their presentations:
- Tell the audience what you want to tell them
- Then tell them
- Then tell them what you told them
Three parts, simple to digest and repetitive. Now imagine a bookcase, with the traditional bookend, books and bookend. You need all three parts for the bookends to have a purpose and the books to stay upright.
In this same way, imagine that the first bookend is about taking control of an interaction and setting expectations: tell the audience what you want to tell them.
The books are about managing expectations: then tell them.
And the final bookend is about summarizing and outlining next steps: then tell them what you told them.
Try designing and implementing this model for your own use. With practice, people will respond to you in a more positive and constructive way.
