How to Take Care of Employees

Retain your best employees by offering full benefits

Professional Workplace - Maintain a clean and professional work environment for employees to conduct business on a day-to-day basis.

Contract a housekeeping service to maintain the overall office building, and instruct employees to keep their own personal work space tidy. Employees are likely to be more productive in an organized surrounding versus a cluttered, dirty environment. Ensure employees have an adequate, well-lit parking area and break rooms, as well as outdoor smoking areas, if necessary.

Open Communication - Maintain an open-door policy, encouraging employees to approach their managers to discuss problems or conflicts. Instruct managers in turn to touch base with employees on a regular basis to provide encouragement and constructive criticism and to correct unprofessional behavior. To minimize misunderstandings, ensure that all employees know the hierarchy of command in the office, so everyone is clear on who reports to whom.

Advancement Opportunities - Promote from within the company whenever possible to encourage hard work and company loyalty from employees. An employee is more likely to give his best when advancement opportunities exist and he can see a bright future with the company, instead of working day-in-and-day-out in a position that offers no chance to excel or advance. Give employees opportunities to expand their knowledge and keep up-to-date with advancing technology by paying for seminars and education courses and providing updated training manuals.

Recognition - Organize employee recognition events, such as employee-of-the-month awards or more expanded annual award ceremonies, to recognize employees who excel and give more than necessary to everyday job duties. An employee is more likely to take pride in his job and feel valued by the company when individual achievements are recognized and celebrated by managers.

Benefits - Make employee benefits the key to employee retention. Companies can show they value employees by providing paid time off as well as necessities such as medical insurance and dental plans. Retirement plans such as 401ks with employer-matched contributions show employees the company is interested not only in workers' current needs, but in helping provide a secure retirement.

Recreation - Provide opportunities such as holiday parties and company picnics throughout the year for employees to relax and bond with co-workers outside the office environment. Encourage employees to bring their spouses and children to gatherings as a sign that the company values their employees' family connections.
