you're unlikely to have any shortage of advice when it comes to the hiring process. Each source has its own number of steps and best practices for finding the ideal employee. According to Inc.com, hiring employees is actually a strategic decision that can affect a business's competitive position. As you begin the process, create a checklist with the qualities that are most important to you in an employee. Also list the steps that you plan to take in the hiring process to serve as a guide as you begin your search.

2. - Write a Job Description. - Once you know the type of candidate you're looking for, you can post a job description or help wanted advertisement to a job line. This means you must first write the job description, which will be useful in attracting qualified and interested candidates. This job description can help you make job expectations clear and when it comes time to train your new employee. The U.S. Small Business Administration notes the importance of establishing eligibility guidelines for an employee that fit within employment regulations. For example, if your job description includes using heavy machinery, indicate that only workers with the proper credentials should apply.

3. - Conduct Interviews. - Once you receive resumes from interested job candidates, you may begin to conduct interviews.This step in the process varies based on the number of candidates you want to consider. For example, if only a few people apply for your job opening, individual interviews may be best. If hundreds apply, you can save time by conducting brief phone interviews before moving to individual interviews with the best candidates, and then second interviews with your top choices. Inc.com notes the importance of tailoring interview questions to your specific business. The site also suggests using a candidate appraisal form to note how well each applicant performs during each stage of the screening and interview process.

4. - Negotiate a Job Offer. - Once you select a candidate whom you wish to hire, you must make a formal job offer. This may take the form of a written contract, or a verbal offer, which creates an implied contract. The candidate may wish to negotiate a higher wage, more comprehensive benefits or a different start date than you had in mind. The U.S. Small Business Administration notes the importance of beginning with minimum wage and benefit guidelines, which come from state and federal employment laws, to ensure that the compensation you offer is fair and legal. Before making an offer, determine how much the individual is worth to your business and whether the next candidate in line would satisfy the needs of the opening.

5. - Follow Up. - Even after you've hired an employee, the hiring process is not over. To prepare for future hiring and ensure that the new worker integrates well with your existing workforce, set up a process for following up. Check in with your new worker after one month or service to talk about any lingering employment questions or issues in the workplace. You must also ensure that your new employee's work space meets safety guidelines, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

When an employee leaves, perform an exit interview to learn about why your workers choose to go elsewhere. Use this information in the future to select candidates who will be loyal and are appropriate fits for the positions and for your business.
