3 Things That Will Eliminate Work Stress, Bar None

Control Stress Before it Controls You.

Stress is a normal part of life that everybody experiences (if you're human). Some stress is actually desirable, as it keeps us motivated and productive--the good stress.

But too much of it over a long period of time with no relief? I hope you're not that person, it can be harmful and burn you out.

So when you're stressed to the max at work (been there), you can't exactly run away and avoid your problems. Well, you could, but you'd have even bigger problems.

While every job produces some degree of frustration and stress, the first step to minimizing it is to identify its source.

Sure, that sounds like common sense...and it is, but we tend to ignore those stressful situations when it happens, and we let it slide instead of recognizing that, "OK, this is a problem that has got to stop or it's going to kill me." And then doing something about it.

Well, now you can.

3 Ways to Control and Even Eliminate Your Stress

First off, let me ask you a few questions. Answer yes or no.

  • Do you feel tired and anxious a lot?
  • Are you finding yourself getting angry or irritable more often than usual?
  • Having problems sleeping?
  • Does worrying about work seem to dominate your day?
  • Are you calling in sick more often than usual?

If you nodded yes to a few of these, it's time to take some steps to reduce your stress. Here's what I recommend:

Be proactive and plan ahead.
If there's a major project, meeting, or task ahead, plan for it well in advance. Anticipate what may present obstacles to meeting your goals and deadlines. You can't foresee every problem headed your way, I know, but if you work on solutions to potential problems before they come up, you'll feel more in control of your life. Try it.

Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize.
I can't stress this enough. Start by making a list of what you need to do and prioritize each of the items. If most of the items on your list are top priorities, you'll naturally be under stress to get them all done. Here's what to do: RE-FRAME! Meaning, there's another way of looking at your list. Are there some things that are "must-do's" and others that you can put off till later? So revise that list and make it realistic--make it work for you. Once it's revised, knock it down diligently on your way to achieving your daily goals like a boss.

Change what needs to be changed. Period!
OK, all you perfectionists out there, I have news that may just help improve your health and outlook in life: Accept that there are things you can't change. That may have stung, I know, but facing the fact that you can't control everything coming your way--layoffs, health issues, death in the family--will release some of that anxiety. The things that are in your control, you can manage just fine. So do yourself and the people closest to you a favor: Take it easy, do one thing at a time, and then refocus again on what's immediately in front of you. Life will get a lot simpler.
