Small Business Ideas for Going Green

Business Woman Coaching in Houston to Finding Ideal Clients

Your company is going green, and now you have to figure out what, exactly, “going green” entails.

The good news is there are many ways to sustain an eco-friendly work environment without breaking the bank. Small changes can help maximize your business’s commitment to conservation and develop your corporate social responsibility. Here are some easy-to-implement ideas to get your company moving down a greener path.

“BE PAPER SAVVY”

The issue of wasting paper is an eco-epidemic that plagues most businesses today. If your company can find a way to reduce the amount of paper that comes in and goes out, you will gain a greener advantage. Start by setting up employee computers to automatically print double-sided. Encourage employees to only print documents (and make copies) when it’s absolutely necessary. This will establish an organizational culture of conducting business electronically from the get-go. You can accomplish this by creating electronic filing systems and using PowerPoint presentations for meetings rather than passing out packets of paper.

“MAKE RECYCLING EASY”

Stocking your building with handy recycle bins will send the message to your employees (and visitors) that recycling is important. Recycle bins should be placed in easily accessible locations, such as break rooms, hallways, conference rooms and copy areas. Educate your staff about the types of materials that are recyclable so they can participate in your recycling program. For instance, according to the official City of Houston website, magazines and envelopes are acceptable recyclables in Houston.

“SAY NO TO STYROFOAM PRODUCTS”

As a business owner, it’s likely that you’ll want to keep some kitchen essentials, like disposable cups, in break room areas to accommodate your staff. When considering your disposable options, remember that Styrofoam, according to Verdant (a website that promotes maintaining the health of the environment), does not biodegrade and will remain in landfills for years. To sustain a green philosophy, say no to Styrofoam and encourage employees to bring their personal mugs or cups to the office. This reduces waste and saves money for the company.

“KEEP AN EYE ON ENERGY”

By employing energy efficient habits at work, you can save electricity, as well as money on your electric bill. For instance, when you aren’t using a conference room, or when you leave your office for lunch, switch off the lights. Also, do not leave electronics plugged into outlets when you aren’t using them. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, many electrical devices draw hidden power from outlets even in the “off” position.

“CLEAN GREEN”

A simple and inexpensive way to establish a green work environment is to switch to eco-friendly cleaning supplies. When you clean with all-natural products, you are sparing yourself – and the environment – from the toxins that are found in regular cleaning agents. If you buy your eco-friendly cleaning supplies at a store, look for labels that advertise words like "green" and "organic." These products contain ingredients such as natural botanicals and oils, and are generally non-toxic.
