Why Women Make Excellent Investors
Women know how to juggle competing demands
Legendary comedienne Lucille Ball said: "If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. The more things you do, the more you can do."
I might alter her words just slightly to read: If you want something done, ask a busy woman to do it. Which in no way is meant to minimize the contributions of men. I have a husband and a son. Both are highly competent and skilled. But when I have a complicated, detail-oriented request, I call my busy daughter. Because women know how to juggle competing demands.
Women are hard-wired with the attributes evident in skilled investors.
Not only does my personal experience suggest women innately possess the traits required to invest successfully, but academic research supports it as well. A recent study at UCLA examined brain-imaging of healthy twins and found significant differences between the sexes. Generally, young adult women are "better connected" between the left and right hemispheres of their brain; men exhibit better connections within each hemisphere. The takeaway? Women just may be better at multitasking and analytical thought, which requires both hemispheres, while men may be better at more focused, sequential tasks.
The research confirms women are excellent investors. In other words, women's brains demonstrate proficiency in one of the most prized investment skills, multitasking. That is, gathering data from myriad sources and interpreting it. The flow of data streaming from our right hemisphere to our left and back gives us an intuitive edge. And we have other innate attributes that lead to measurable excellence as investors.
