How to Terminate an Automatically Renewed Contract

You may do so by contacting the company directly

Step 1
Read the terms of the contract carefully, paying special attention to the fine print that you may have missed when you signed up. Follow the directions for canceling the contract.

Step 2
Highlight the period of time you have to cancel the contract before it renews automatically, if applicable. If the contract already has renewed, the contract should state where you should send a cancellation letter and how long it will take the company to process your request. In most cases, it will take at least 30 days from the day your cancellation request is received.

Step 3
Write a brief letter stating your desire to cancel the contract, effective immediately. It is not necessary to state a reason for the cancellation, though you might choose to do so, especially if you are displeased with the company’s service. Include your business' name and phone number on the letter, just in case the company has a question about your request.

Step 4
Send the cancellation letter by certified mail. This tactic is especially helpful if you are trying to cancel a contract before it renews automatically because the receipt will serve as proof that you beat the company’s renewal deadline. But even if you are canceling a contract that already has renewed, a certified receipt will serve as proof that you sent the cancellation letter in case a dispute arises.

Step 5
Stay on top of the status of your request and call the company’s customer service department if your credit card statement reflects another charge to your account after 30 days. Some companies are slow to process requests to cancel contracts, but your persistence should pay off.
