Leadership Tips for Women in Business

Women Business Owners Face Certain Challenges that Men do Not

1. Focus on your accomplishments, not your guilt - Many women feel guilt about working. Sometimes the guilt is generated from external sources (spouses, family, and friends who feel abandoned), other times it is generated from within (we are often our own worse critics), and then there are times when you get a dose from both sources. Approaching work with a positive attitude that focuses on your accomplishments and the benefits derived from those accomplishments goes a long way towards helping you gain support from others and keeping you motivated.

2. Network with other female professionals - Lauren Neilson, in "8 Tips to Help You Become a Networking Guru!" defines networking as "...the bringing together of like-minded individuals who, through relationship building, become walking, talking advertisements for one another." It is especially important for women to network with other women because, in addition to the positive promotional aspects, it also provides a source of advice and strategies for dealing with women-specific issues in the workplace. Networking should be an integral part of every professional woman’s strategy to obtain resources, contacts, ideas, information, job leads, sales leads, and valuable advice, and it can be done online, at work events, at social gatherings, etc…
3. Find a female mentor - Since women encounter a different set of challenges in the workplace than men, consider finding a female mentor in your company or industry. A female mentor should be better able to warn you of obstacles you may not be aware of and may have hints for dealing with gender discrimination issues. If you want to keep the mentoring relationship outside your current work environment, contact a local professional association for possible mentor names.
4. Learn how to communicate effectively - All working professionals need to be adept at negotiating deals, resolving conflicts, influencing others, making a business case, establishing credibility, and persuading others. While some of these communication tactics may come naturally to you, any that don’t can, and should be, be learned.
5. Be a problem solver and decision maker - Create a framework for making sound business decisions and establish a reputation for being a problem solver. Always follow through on promises and commitments made in the workplace and you will become known as professional who can be relied upon. Don't be a damsel in distress, instead be the hero who saves the day!
