Interview Patty

One is the Loneliest Number for Women Entrepreneurs

Women are starting businesses in record numbers

Women are starting businesses in record numbers. The latest figures indicate that women are launching more than 1,200 new businesses per day generating more than $1.4 trillion in revenues. And the projections only see continued growth.

We are living in an amazing and exciting time.  The doors have open for women that were either previously closed or simply not there at all in the past. Technology, the Internet, social media and affordable tools online and offline have made starting a business much easier and affordable than ever in history.

The one striking factor that has eluded me though is why so many women end up isolated, alone and recreating the wheel at every turn rather than connecting, networking, learning and lending a hand.  When I spoke to over one hundred entrepreneurial women for my book and in talking to women business owners in my personal and professional life it astounds me how many women feel like they’re doing everything on their own. But why?

Women are natural connectors and prone towards communal activity. Why doesn’t that translate to launching a business?  I’m sure the reasons are many but let’s focus more on how you can make sure that you’re poised for success.

Launching a business takes a tribe so make sure you find your tribe early. Here’s how:

Network
Get out there and network, but do it with a purpose.  There are amazing women-focused and industry-focused networking groups in every town. Don’t just throw on your best dress, slap on a name tag and stand there. Before you go, have a game plan.

Seek Out Mentors
This is a topic that is written about ad nauseam and is easier to write on than actually making it happen. If you’re a small business owner or solopreneur working from home, it can be tricky to find mentors. It is often easier in the corporate world due to proximity.

Find Others Like You
When I say “like” you I mean other business people. There is something incredibly unique and challenging about starting and running a business and often your friends and significant other don’t really understand what you're doing let alone what you’re mentally and emotionally going through.

Be a Connector Yourself
In self-development and spiritual circles you will often hear, “Give away what you want.” So if you want to bring in more financial abundance then begin giving money away to charities.
